Food and hunger

This section explains how hunger in Gaza is measured and how it is met: the whole Strip is classified in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis), with 1.4 million people — around 67% of the population — facing acute food insecurity through December 2026, including 212,000 in Phase 4 (Emergency).

The point we return to in every article here is that the improvement is real and fragile at the same time: acute malnutrition fell after nutrition programmes were scaled up, and yet aid coverage has declined since February 2026, and any further reduction could reverse the gains quickly.

We write about mechanism rather than slogan: what goes into a food parcel and why, how what is distributed gets cooked in a place with no fuel, and why part of the food is wasted because the water is contaminated — 75% of Gaza's population depends on trucked water.

And we name who delivers: the World Food Programme, UNRWA, the community kitchens preparing around 704,000 meals a day, the subsidised bakeries, and the local organisations — ourselves among them.
